Hollywood has the Oscars and London has the BAFTAS but thanks to Carolyn Hinton, Bideford 500 heritage group have The GRAFTAs, which stands for, Grenville Renown Awards For Torridge Area. Bideford 500 believe that there is a wealth of talent right here on our own doorstep and it’s Bideford’s turn to roll out the red carpet and showcase what we can do! The GRAFTAs project was first devised in 2013 by Carolyn Hinton for Bideford 500 and is aimed at encouraging local youngsters to embark on a voyage of discovery about our local heritage. Students are asked to create a piece of art inspired by their findings from a wide range of disciplines covering many forms of visual art, technology, literature and performance.
As with the BAFTAs or OSCARs, five nominations will be chosen from each category who will go forward to a glitzy awards night were the red carpet will be out and the cameras will be rolling and winners will be announced from the ubiquitous golden envelope scooping a bounty of £50.00 each due to the kind generosity of Bideford’s local businesses who sponsor each prize. The most outstanding entry of the competition will be awarded The Laureate Crown which is a stunning piece of metalwork created by local Metal Sculptors, Bill and Peach Shaw of Northam.
All entries will be displayed in a fabulous 2 day art exhibition celebrating our local heritage and talent in Bideford College.
Members of the public are being invited to take part in the GRAFTAs by voting for The Lifetime Achievement Award to honour an individual who has selflessly contributed their time and talent for the benefit of our local community. Contact us either by email firstname.lastname@example.org or here.
